Using a shell script only is not possible, I am afraid, given the proprietary format that excel spreadsheets are in. But if I am not wrong we can use perl commands in unix scripts also? So what perl commands can be used to read the excel and write the same contents to a csv file. Most things that can be done in a shell script can also be done in a perl script and more.

Such things as font selections, column widths, colors, functions, graphs, etc… I know of no Unix utility that will decode this and produce a csv. As mentioned before, the simplest is to have the file saved as a CSV in Windows, then ftp it as a text file to the server.
