Fable 2 is an old but not forgotten gem. Back when the first Fable game came out in , it introduced something that would change video games forever.

This player choice mechanism is now advertised in bold letters as a unique feature of RPGs in Fable 2 carried forward the legacy of the original game, with an improved story, gameplay and combat.

Like all Fable games, Fable 2 takes place in Albion, which for this iteration, has a European renaissance vibe to it. The combat is divided into three parts- melee, ranged, and magic. While the main missions decide the fate of the game, the wacky side missions are the star of the show. The whole thing is brimming with humor, making each step of the game even more interesting.

While the complete Mass Effect trilogy was a well-made RPG with a tied storyline, the second game stood out of the bunch. Mass Effect 2 puts you in the shoes of commander Sheppard, an intergalactic captain. The game plays out like a sci-fi movie features a bit of everything.

An excellent combat mechanism, space exploration , and dialogue choices that can completely change the fate of the game. The game also focuses on side characters, whom you recruit and complete loyalty missions in order to earn their loyalty.

Do you like weird RPG? If so, Planescape: Torment is something you should definitely check out. Um, yeah. This is NOT a triple A studio game. I set out to create my own RPG, and I did it. Ever wonder what it would be like to be trapped in an RPG? Now, the complete edition of the game is available on PC, opening it up to an entirely new demographic of gamers. Horizon: Zero Dawn takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where the world has been overrun by robotic animals and the remainder of humanity has broken into tribes.

The plot is unexpectedly nuanced and has some surprising moral quandaries. Aloy herself is a bit of blank slate, which allows players to influence her behavior through conversations and key decisions.

Aloy is primarily armed with a bow and arrow, though she gets a number of creative tools and weapons throughout the game. The machines are fast and deadly, which makes the game a great challenge for those looking for something on the difficult side. Horizon: Zero Dawn was one of the best titles on the PS4, and seeing a great title like this move to the PC is always welcome. There are games that are influential for subsequent games in their genre, and there are games that defined the genre in and of itself.

Fable and the subsequent Fable: The Lost Chapters is precisely that game. While not everything about the game has aged well, Fable is a historic chapter in the history of RPG titles, and its influence can still be felt in the genre today. Fable originally released for the Xbox and was very well received. Fable: The Lost Chapters is the PC port of the game, and it includes some new content and a new ending for the game. In the game, players take on a nameless Hero who is supposedly the only member of his family to survive an attack on their village.

Early on, the game introduces its morality system. After the opening hours and some tutorials, the world slowly opens up to you as your hero treks out to make a name for himself. Your appearance will also change as you age and based on what skills you choose to develop. In a genre of lookalikes, it can be easy for games — even high profile ones — to be lost in the mix.

NieR: Automata is not one of those games. It might appear like it at first with some familiar design choices and story beats, but NieR proves to be a complex and thought-provoking RPG that will leave gamers thinking about it long after they have set it down.

NieR: Automata takes place in the same setting as the PS3 game Nier , which is alternate timeline in the Drakengard setting.

The game is totally self-contained in its own right. Players takes control of 2B, a sentient combat android as she battles against a deadly machine menace. However, as the game progresses, 2B discovers more about her enemies that shed a new light on the ongoing conflict.

Ethical dilemmas aside, NieR: Automata gets really crazy after you beat it. The game requires multiple play-throughs to get the entire story, with each replay unlocking a new chunk of the story. It leans into meta-narrative, and while it can be repetitive it is overall very rewarding.

For one of the most satisfying and complex RPG narratives available, Nier Automata should be near the top of your list.

Its complex gameplay and unconventional structure makes it one of the most worthwhile games you can play. If there is a game that comes close to knocking Skyrim off its throne as reigning champ of RPGs, it would be The Witcher 3. The story follows Geralt of Rivia, who is searching for his adoptive daughter Ciri as she is pursued by the Wild Hunt.

That simple inciting incident takes Geralt on a journey that is over one hundred hours where he will experience a number of horrors from creatures and man alike. The action is also the most refined of the series. The other titles were clunky with combat, but The Witcher 3 is far smoother. Geralt may be too stiff for some players, but overall combat in experience in The Witcher 3 is far smoother and more visceral than before.

The Witcher 3 is one of the best RPGs of this generation, and it is one that will consistently be looked back on as one of the most significant titles to ever be released, not just for RPGs but for video games as a whole. There are some exceptions, but by and large the isometric RPG has been left behind as an artifact of a bygone era. At least, that is until Divinity: Original Sin came out. This game — partially funded on Kickstarter —revived the old isometric RPG and made it accessible to a whole new generation of gamers.

Combine that with its stellar story and amazing editor, and it is a game that players can play and replay for years to come, even six years after it came out. Divinity: Original Sin has two customizable protagonists called Source Hunters, members of a group that want to eradicate a dangerous magic simply called the Source, hence the name. They stumble on a conspiracy led by a group called the Immaculates and their leader the Conduit.

This conspiracy leads them across the world and to different realms in a thrilling and well-written adventure, especially for something made on such a budget. The game gets even more fun with the editor, where players can make their own adventures and publish them online for other players.

That adds nearly endless amounts of adventures for the characters and the world, which is something RPG fans always appreciate. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was a sort of diamond in the rough for the last console generation. It was made from a small studio that quickly imploded, pretty much killing any chance of fans seeing a sequel. So when Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning was announced, fans were excited. Not that the publisher needed to change much, because Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning still holds up.

Its gameplay is still snappy and exciting, and there is enough content to go through and explore to satisfy any RPG fan. There has been an upgrade in the graphics, but it is very minor. You could hardly call it an upgrade at all. In Amalur , players take on the role of the Fateless, a being who was killed and brought back to life.

Their resurrection has separated them from the influence of Fate basically destiny , and now they can go out and make a real impact on the conflict between the factions of the Fae.

Salvatore was the mind behind much of the world and story. However, it lays the groundwork for one of the most fun and engaging RPGs to come out this decade. While RPGs are well-known for their complex narratives, sometimes it is nice to have a game that is less story focused and more action focused. Now, hear us out on this one. When Diablo III launched, it was a disaster. The game was also sparse on content and rarely innovated from the work done in Diablo II.

But we live in a different world now. Games as services are more common, and Blizzard has been actively updating the game and adding new content, even to this day.
